Horses to Ride
Laura went to the stable. Four horses stood there. She put a saddle
on Star. He was seven years old, big and dark brown. Her sister came out
to the stable. They were both going to exercise the horses. It was a warm,
sunny day. Janice saddled up Moonbeam, a white mare. They got on the
horses and started walking them.
A few minutes later, Laura was telling Janice about the new doctor in
her hospital. She raised her hand for a second to make a point. Just then,
Star bucked. Laura went flying into the air. She landed on her head and
shoulder on the grass.
"Oh, my gosh!" Jan cried. "Laura, are you all right?"
Laura moaned. Jan gently rolled her over. She didn’t see any blood.
That’s good, she thought.
"Can you move? You’re not paralyzed anywhere, are you?"
Jan pulled Laura up into a sitting position. Laura slightly moved her
legs and arms. She wasn’t paralyzed. When she moved her right hand to
touch her head, she groaned.
"What’s the matter?"
"That hurt. When I moved my arm, it hurt."
They still didn’t see any blood. Jan unbuttoned the top buttons on
Laura’s blouse and looked at Laura’s right collarbone.
"Oh, no," she said.
农夫与蛇
It was a cold winter evening, an old man had done his work and was
going home from the fields.
On his way he saw some thing on the ground. He looked at it and
found it was a snake.
It was not dead, but it couldn't move because it was so cold.
"Poor thing," the man said, "I must try to save your life."
"He picked it up and looked for a warm place to put it in.
But how could he find one in such cold weather? So he decided to put
the snake inside his clothes, right next to his heart.
A few minutes later, the snake came back to life and began to move.
When it had become strong enough.it gave the man a deadly bite.
He killed it and went on.When he got back,he was very ill and had to
lie down.
He knew he was dying.
拔苗助长
To Pull up the Seedlings to Help Them Grow
Once upon a time, there was an old farmer who planted a plot of rice.
After he planted the seedlings, every day he went to the field to watch the
seedlings grow. He saw the young shoots break through the soil and grow
taller each day, but still, he thought they were growing too slowly.
Eventually he got impatient with the young plants and suddenly he hit
upon an idea that one by one, he pulled up the young plants by half an
inch. The next early morning, the young man couldn’t wait to check his
“achievement”, but he was heart-broken to see all the pulled-up young
plants dying.
“拔苗助长”
从前,有个农夫,种了稻苗(seedlings)seedlings)后,便希望能早早收成。每天他
到稻田时,都发觉那些稻苗长得非常慢。他等得很不耐烦。想了又想,他终
于想到一个“最佳方法”,他将稻苗全都拔高了几分。第二天,一早起身,他
迫不及待地去稻田看他的“成果”。 哪知,却看到所有的稻苗都枯萎了。
