Peng Shuai hits a return during her first round 6-1, 3-6, 4-6 loss over Italian Flavia Pennetta at the 2007 U.S. Open tennis tournament women's singles in New York on Wednesday, August 29, 2007. Aug. 29 - Chinese tennisplayer Peng Shuai was defeated by Italy's Flavia Pennetta 6-1, 3-6, 4-6 after the two battled each other in the first round of the 2007 U.S. Open women's singles on Wednesday.
With Peng's compatriot Yan Zi ousted by Russian Ekaterina Bychkova one day before, the last Chinese bowed out of the annual Grand Slam Tennis.
Peng Shuai started with an easy 6-1 win in the first set of the match despite being knocked out by Pennetta 2-6, 3-6 in the third round of last year's Wimbledon Open.
However, the hot favorite tennis player was influenced by an unexpected and long medical treatment pause at the beginning of the second set while her opponent seized two break points, winning it 6-3.
The Chinese girl faced tough challenges in the last set competition. After four deuces, Peng Shuai failed to save her fifth service game, finally falling to a 4-6 loss.
The Italian winner will meet another qualifier, No. 13 seed Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic, in the coming second round.
