Good bye and good luck

today, i speak from this podium a final time as your president. as i depart, i want to thank all of you - students, faculty, alumni and staff - with whom i have been privileged to work over these past years. some of us have had our disagreements, but i know that which unites us transcends that which divides us.

some things look different to me than they did five years ago. the world that today’s harvard’s graduates are entering is a profoundly different one than the world administrators entered.

it is a world where opportunities have never been greater for those who know how to teach children to read, or those who know how to distribute financial risk; never greater for those who understand the cell and the pixel; never greater for those who can master, and navigate between, legal codes, faith traditions, computer platforms, political viewpoints.

it is also a world where some are left further and further behind - those who are not educated, those trapped in poverty and violence, those for whom equal opportunity is just a hollow phrase.

scientific and technological advances are enabling us to comprehend the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the most basic constituents of matter, and the miracle of life.

at the same time, today, the actions, and inaction, of human beings imperil not only life on the planet, but the very life of the planet.

globalization is making the world smaller, faster and richer. still, 9/11, avian flu, and iran remind us that a smaller, faster world is not necessarily a safer world.

our world is bursting with knowledge - but desperately in need of wisdom. now, when sound bites are getting shorter, when instant messages crowd out essays, and when individual lives grow more frenzied, college graduates capable of deep reflection are what our world needs.

for all these reasons i believed - and i believe even more strongly today - in the unique and irreplaceable mission of universities.

universities are where the wisdom we cannot afford to lose is preserved from generation to generation. among all human institutions, universities can look beyond present norms to future possibilities, can look through current considerations to emergent opportunities.

and among universities, harvard stands out. with its great tradition, its iconic reputation, its remarkable network of 300,000 alumni, harvard has never had as much potential as it does now.

and yet, great and proud institutions, like great and proud nations at their peak, must surmount a very real risk: that the very strength of their traditions will lead to caution, to an inward focus on prerogative and to a complacency that lets the world pass them by.

and so i say to you that our university today is at an inflection point in its history. at such a moment, there is temptation to elevate comfort and consensus over progress and clear direction, but this would be a mistake. the university’s matchless resources - human, physical, financial - demand that we seize this moment with vision and boldness. to do otherwise would be a lost opportunity. we can spur great deeds that history will mark decades and even centuries from now. if harvard can find the courage to change itself, it can change the world.

good luck charlie is an original disney channel television comedy, which premiered april 4, 2014. it revolves around a denver family, the duncans, as they try to adjust to the birth of their fourth child, charlotte "charlie" duncan. in each episode, the big sister teddy duncan creates a video diary containing advice for charlie about their family and life as a teenager. teddy tries to show charlie what she might go through when she is older in the video diaries. each video diary ends with teddy saying the same phrase, "good luck, charlie."

when the parents return to work, they ask their three older children to help raise their little sister. at the same time, the children are trying to deal with school and typical social challenges in their lives.

第四篇:luck and success

what contributes to success? it's believed that everyone is wondering to clarify it. some claim that success only roots in diligent work and everlasting trial and error, whereas others insist fortune is also an indispensable key to success. as far as i'm concerned, industry and luck are both chief factors of success, while it varies in the ratio of one factor to the other with each individual.

diligence is acknowledged by almost everyone unable to be omitted in search of success. all the hard work in the world can't make up for bad luck. however, hard work can invite good luck for us. as we can see, the forerunners in diverse field, no matter what backgrounds they are born or grow in, are all characterized by diligence. take jack ma, the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of alibaba group and chairman of alibaba, for example and it comes as no surprise that he went through one hardship after another before his final success. after an extremely slow dial-up connection, he got half a page with difficulty and started the tough establishment of china' page. once he said, others can copy my websites, whereas nobody can copy my hardship during the five years. finally, he achieved a fabulous success.

despite the fact that merit of industry had a decisive import on one's success, luck still plays a supporting role and has a lot to do with success, too. success without some luck is almost impossible. without fortune, how could it be that columbus discovered america, enriched his sponsors and changed history? without fortune, how could it be that so many sports stars obtain the gold medal in the olympics? when it comes to success, luck just resembles the dropped apple knocking on head of newton, since it can mean being in the right place to meet someone, or having the right skills to get a job done.

in conclusion, people who work hard help make their own luck by being ready when opportunity knocks. in the road to success, diligence always goes hand in hand with luck.

第五篇:a good teacher, a good luck

i have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. it might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.

i shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery.

she aroused us to shouting, book waving discussions. she had the noisiest class in school and she didn’t even seem to know it. we could never stick to the subject. she breathed curiosity into us so that we brought in facts or truths shielded in our hands like captured fireflies.

she was fired and perhaps rightly so, for failing to teach fundamentals. such things must be learned. but she left a passion in us for the pure knowable world and she inflamed me with a curiosity which has never left. i could not do simple arithmetic but through her i sensed that abstract mathematics was very much like music.

when she was relieved, a sadness came over us but the light did not go out. she left her signature on us, the literature of the teacher who writes on minds. i suppose that to a large extent i am the unsigned manuscript of the high school teacher. what deathless power lies in the hands of such a person.

i can tell my son who looks forward with horror to fifteen years of drudgery that somewhere in the dusty dark a magic may happen that will light up the years... if he is very lucky.
