food-safety crisis in China recent years
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen! I’m very glad that all of you are here for my speech. Tonight, I would like to talk about food-safety crisis in China recent years.
The world and Chinese consumers has witnessed a serious food-safety problem in China the past two years The latest is the case of tainted steamed buns sold in some Shanghai supermarket. Food-safety problem has aroused so much concerns about the food among our Chinese people that it became a hot issue in the two sessions.
Let’s see further the case of tainted steamed buns . The manufacturers recycle the steamed buns which are not sold out and expired in the supermarkets and then use some particular chemicals to make them look fresh again as well as prolong the buns' durability. Obviously, it is very harmful for people’s health and may cause severe disease if people take this kind of steamed buns in the long run.
So why? Why everybody is clear about it’s not the right thing to do but still exist so many food problems?Ladies and gentlemen, have you ever thought about that? Will you agree to do the same if u r in the food manufacturer or work in the supermarket?
As for me, I am one hundred percent sure that gaining profit or making money is the biggest incentive to tempt both the producers and suppliers to counterfeit.
For the producers, they try every means to cut corners or substitute the original ingredients with some poisonous chemicals to reduce the cost.
For the suppliers, such as supermarkets, they tend to choose the cheaper manufacturers for their own benefit when facing a price competition between the manufacturers, which provides chances for some producers who take advantage of this competition to fake.
As to the food-safety watchdogs, some executors want to make use of their power to get profits for themselves, so they then ignore or deregulate the control and monitoring on the companies, thus result in all kinds of bad-quality food and disorder in the market.
Another main reason that I believe that should not be overlooked is the lack of moral quality and credibility in some people who always want to make money for themselves. We all know that it is so tough and challenging a question that we need to take some very essential steps to improve this situation.
So what can we do to solve those food-safety problems in China? From what we have been discussed above, I think our government should suit a remedy to the case and take effective actions without hesitation.
Firstly, make the best use of the law, I mean, strengthen law enforcement. According to the history, some developed countries have also experienced "food-safety crisis", for instance, the well-known "BSE" in Europe, the "poisonous rice" issue in Japan. For those countries, they have been very successful in solving the tough crisis and taught the world good lessons on the importance of law enforcement. In America, it will constitute a crime if any unit is found out any activity of fake no matter what the amount of money is. So for China, it is urgent for the law-making department to amplify the law continuously and at the same time strengthen the enforcement of the law. It means that our enforcement department should punish the companies and citizens severely once any counterfeit are reported.
Secondly, enhance the sense of responsibility and honesty of our citizens, from the producers to the providers, from the consumers to the law-executors. I assume, and strongly believe that if every people of all the departments during the process of the food-manufacturing can be totally responsible for their job, then the producing of the food can be ensured safe even there still exist some mercenaries because the watchdogs can catch them out immediately and give them heavy punishments, and the consumers will never have a chance to buy their food again.
Thirdly, make the process of the food-making and monitoring open for the public . The food-making companies and the watchdogs should receive the supervision and control from the government and the consumers. The consumers have the right to know about the whole process of food making just as they have the right to enjoy safe food, so if they suspect and report to relative department of some cases then they won’t worry about to be hurt or threatened. The producers dare not to cheat their consumers if they know they will pay very high price and get charged if they produce bad quality food.
Ladies and gentlemen, actions speak louder than words. It is time for our government to take a hard line to solve the problem quickly to prevent more people from suffering the poisonous food and getting disease. Everyone, including you and me, has the right and responsibility to protect ourselves. So, let's work together to construct a safer market ,a better life and a more harmony society.
Thank you!
