Many great inventions are greeted with ridicule and disbelief. The invention of the airplane was no exception.Although many people who heard about the first powered flight on December 17,1903,were excited and impressed, others reacted with peals of laughter. The idea of flying an aircraft was repulsive to some people.Such people called Wilbur and Orville Wright, the inventors of the first flying machine, impulsive fools.Negative reactions, however, did not stop the Wrights.
Impelled by their desire to succeed, they continued their experiments in aviation.
Orville and Wilbur Wright had always had a compelling interest in aeronautics and mechanics. As young boys, they earned money by making and selling kites and mechanical toys.Later, theydesigned a newspaper—folding machine, built a printing press, and operated a bicycle—repair shop.In 1896,when they read about the death of Otto Lilienthal, the brother’s interest in flight grew into a compulsion.
Lilienthal,a pioneer in han9—glidin9,had controlled his gliders by shifting his body in the desired direction. This idea was repellent to the Wright brothers, however, and they searched for more efficient methods to control the balance of airborne vehicles. In l900 and l901,the Wrights tested numerous gliders and developed control techniques. The brothers’inability to obtain enough lift power for the gliders almost led them to abandon their efforts.
After further study, the Wright brothers concluded that the published tables of air pressure on curved surfaces must be wrong. They set up a wind tunnel and began a series of experiments with model wings.Because of their efforts, the old tables were repealed in time and replaced by the first reliable figures for air pressure on curved surfaces. This work,in turn, made it possible for them to design a machine that would fly.In l 903 the Wrights built their first airplane, which cost less than one thousand dollars. They even designed and built their own source of propulsion—a lightweight gasoline engine. When they started the engine on December 17,the airplane pulsated wildly before taking off.The plane managed to stay aloft for twelve seconds, however, and it flew one hundred twenty feet.
By 1905 the Wrights had perfected the first airplane that could turn, circle, and remain airborne for half all hour at a time.Others had flown in balloons or in hang gliders, but the Wright brothers were the first to build a full.size machine that could fly under its own power. As the contributors of one of the most outstanding engineering achievements in history, the Wright brothers are accurately called the fathers of aviation.

Different Customs in Different Countries
I' m from Colombia; we' re pretty relaxed about time. If you tell a friend you're going to their house for dinner, it's okay if you arrive a bit late. Spending time with family and friends is very important to us. We often just drop by our friends' homes. We don't usually have to make plans to meet our friends. Often we just walk around the town center, seeing as many of our friends as we can!
In Switzerland, it's very important to be on time. We're the land of watches, after all!If someone invites you to meet them at 4:00, you have to be there at 4:00. If you're even fifteen minutes late, your friend may get angry. Also, we never visit a friend's house without calling first.
We usually make plan to see friends. We usually plan to do something interesting, or go somewhere together.

|.Vocabulary and Structure
另外根据主谓一致的原则,当主语后面跟有由with,togetherwith,like,except,but,no less than,as well all等引出的短语时,谓语动词与前面的主语一致,故选C。
Would you mind one’s doing sth.?
5.【答案】A。 some time意为“一些时间,一段时间”;sometime表示过去或未来的一个时间点;sometimes意为“有时”,等于at times;some times意为“几次”,表次数。故选A。
7.【答案】A。解析:由于“watch TV”和“do sports”是由than连接的两个对等成分,符合would rather do A than do B“宁愿做A,也不做B”句型。故选A。
8.【答案】B。解析:本题需要辨析句型“It is+adj.+(of sb.)to do sth.”和“It is+adj.+(for sb.)to do sth.”。
解析:pay money for sth.意为“付钱买……”,pay后面不能直接跟the book;sb.spend(s)time/money on s山.意为“某人做某事花多长时间(多少金钱)”;It takes sb.+时间+to do sth.
11.【答案】A。解析:由于the park在定语从句中作地点状语,所以用where或in which,故选A。
12.【答案】A。 故选A。
13.【答案】B。解析:Would you please…? No problem./Sure./Certainly/of course./AU right./I’m sorry…。
17.【答案】A。解析:句型”see…doing sth.”
解析:spend time on sth./(in)doing sth.
解析:sth.takes sb+time+to do stll.
20.【答案】A。 故选A。

||.CIoze
23.【答案】A。
28.【答案】A。 故选A。
29.【答案】B。解析:根据句型“help(sb.)do,to do sth.
33.【答案】A。 故选A。
37.【答案】A。
