The function of the hood, for the great majority of cars, is to provide access to theengine compartment and related systems, part of the air-conditioning system, a number offluid tanks, the windshield wiper system,a relevant part of the electric harness and thefront lamps.
In the past, hood openings to the front, back or side have been designed; amongthese, only the front opening can provide easy access to any area of the enginecompartment. The progressive increase of service intervals has strongly reduced the needto open the hood and therefore the need for remote opening control. Some new vehicleshave already adopted a solution with traditional openings only with small flaps whereservice fluid fillers are located, while the full compartment can be opened in a servicestation by turning some form of simple device with specified tools.
The replacement of traditional hoods with simple cover panels can offer someadvantages such as:weight reduction, cost reduction of panel and missing accessories, hinges, struts and latches and moreover a greater design freedom, which facilitateoptimization of shape and stiffness for pedestrian impact.
