Navigation systems use our nation's satellite global positioning system to display thegeographic location of the vehicle. A dash display shows a road map with the position ofthe vehicle on it. Advanced systems can give other useful information; traffic information, road work, parking lot openings, miles to destination, turnoffs, etc.
Basically, the navigation system communicates with the satellite system to determinevehicle direction and speed. The vehicle's on-board computer compares this data with alarge databases of roads and highways, usually from a compact disc.
A road map of the area with a representation of the vehicle's location can then beshown on the dash display. This can help the driver navigate highways and roads moreefficiently. Besides visually helping the driver navigate, some systems also use verbaloutput to help the driver.
