Restraint systems help hold a vehicle's occupants in their seats, protecting them frominjury during an accident. Restraint systems include the seat belt and the airbag system, aswell as the vehicle's body, frame, steering column and dash.
They are two kinds of restraint systems, active and passive restraints. An activerestraint system requires that the occupants ready the system. For example, seat beltsthat must be buckled manually are classified as an active system. A passive restraintsystem operates without driver or passenger activation. Airbags and automatic seat beltsare passive restraint systems.
Seat belts and airbags are the restraint systems that are responsible for keeping thevehicle occupants in the right position, so that the occupants avoid sustaining injuriesbeyond the expected limits due to impact against passenger compartment componentsduring rapid deceleration following a crash.
