多瑙河畔的布达佩斯 Budapest
Budapest was lavished with money and talent by the ruling Hapsburgs for more than five centuries, unlike Prague (considered a poor relation) which was also under the arm of the mighty Austria Hapsburg empire. A fine city, it suffered calamities during the first and second world wars when many of its fine buildings suffered the consequences. Therefore it lacks some of the Gothic richness of Prague but for all that it is a fine city which hosts many musical events,Trade Fairs and the Grand Prix in July.
Like Prague it is separated by a river - in this case, the Danube separates Buda from Pest and the city only became known as Budapest in 1873. It is Pest which is the main tourist attraction with the main (traffic free) shopping streets, Opera House and other theatres and hotels.
It's a very lively city that can just about provide everything from Beer Halls to Opera. The city had its share of woes including being taken by the Russians in 1945 and over 40 years the cold war has gradually thawed out and Hungary has been an open country for over 20 years to German and Austrian visitors.
