 Surinamese military(苏里南军事的) strongman General Desi Bouterse announced on December 31, 1990 that he had taken over(接收) the army command with the agreement of the new president. Bouterse angrily gave up his post on December 23 after a dispute(争论) with Ramsewak Shanker, president of the tiny South American nation, which lies on the south of the Atlantic, on the north of Brazil, to the southeast of Venezuela and between Guyana on the west and east. The army announced they were overthrowing(推翻) Shanker the next day.

Bouterse said the new President Johan Kraag agreed on the morning of December 31 to let him take up the army command again after careful talks with the military leaders.

Surinam’s Parliament(议会), under the great pressure from the army, elected Kraag on December 29. The army general ruled Surinam between 1980 and 1988 before handing the power over to the elected civilian(文人的) government. Although there have been on public protests(抗议), the new government has not been recognized by Venezuela, Panama and some other Latin American countries.
