A
“Depend on yourself” is what nature says to every man. Parents can help you. Teachers can help you. Others can help you. But all these help you to help yourself. There have been many great men in history. But many of them were very poor in childhood, and had no uncle, aunts or friends to help them. Schools were few and not very good. They could not depend upon them for an education. They saw how it was, and set to work to know something. They worked their own way up to fame. One of the famous teachers in England used to tell his pupils, “I can’t make worthy men of you, but I can help you make men of yourselves.”
Some young men have no ambition(志向) to do better than others in anything; they are to be pitied. They never can accomplish (succeed in doing) much unless they see their weak points and change their course. They are nothing now, and will be nothing as long as they live, unless they accept the advice of their parents and teachers, and depend on their own honest efforts.
41.“Depend on yourself” in this passage means ________.
A. rely on your own efforts B. wait for others to help

43. If young people depend on their own efforts, ________.
A. they are to be pitied
B. they can be successful in their careers
C. they are nothing and will be nothing in the future
D. they can be ambitious
B
If you go into the woods with your friends, stay with them. If you don’t, you may get lost. If you do get lost, though, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don’t try to find your friends—let them find you. You can help them to find you by staying in one place.
There is another way to help your friends or other people nearby to find you. Give them a signal by shouting or whistling three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal given three times is a call for help. You will be helped by others.
Keep up the shouting or whistling, always three times together. When people hear you, they will know that you are not making noise for fun. They will let you know they have heard your signal by giving two shouts, two whistles or two gunshots. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help. If you don’t think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with branches, lots of leaves and grass.
What would you do if you get hungry or need drinking water? You have to leave your little branch house to look for a brook. Don’t just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk so that you can find your way back.
The most important thing to do when you are lost is--- stay in one place.
44. How do you let people believe that you are not just making noise for fun?
A. Stop now and then. B. Shout at the top of voice again and again
C. Go on shouting or whistling. D. Shout or whistle three times once in a while.
45. If nobody comes to help before night, what should you do then?

Many TV programs seem to be quite realistic. One who watches TV often feels whatever happens in the film can as well happen to him. With only a little imagination, every man in the street may appear to be a thief, a spy or a murderer(杀人犯). Jane had been watching a spy film at a friend’s home, in which a young girl had been followed and murdered. Jane felt a little frightened and she took a train back to the center of the city. Since there were a lot of people traveling with her, she felt much safer.
A man sat opposite her, reading a newspaper. She thought nothing of it until she saw him staring at her. Remembering the film and feeling uncomfortable, she got off the train and went to the bus stop. However, he got on the same bus as she did. She found he was following her, so she got off the bus. As the street almost became empty, she was getting more and more frightened. She walked as quickly as she could but still could hear footsteps behind her. She was afraid to look over her shoulder. It seemed to have been hours before she reached the front door. She felt for her keys, but was unable to find them. The footsteps stopped behind her. She felt a hand on her shoulder. Instead of feeling hands round her neck, however, she heard a pleasant voice: “ I apologize if I’ve frightened you. I am your neighbor. I thought I recognized you in the train, but I was not sure.”
