英文主要有七大词类：名词，代词，限定词，形容词，副词，动词，连词。每个单词在一个具体语境中必定属于一种词类，但很多单词在不同语境中词类发生变化。

1.名词：

1)概念和功能：表示人或事物的名称的词。

2)分类：名词根据意义可以分为两大类：专有名词和普通名词。

专有名词是专指特定的某人某事物的名称的名词，如：

Tom， Mr. Liu， President Hu， Beijing， West Lake， Americans， Buddhism(佛教)， English， January， Saturday， A Tale of Two Cities(《双城记》)等。

普通名词是通指人或事物的名词，又可分为四小类：

(1)个体名词，指以一个一个的可分辨的个体为单位存在的人或事物，如：aunt， apartment， panda， classroom， teacher， bar， block， piece， cup，等。个体名词有单数和复数形式。

(2)集体名词，指由个体组成的集体，如：team， committee， family， class， group， audience， company， government， army等。集体名词若看成一个整体是单数概念，若看成一个一个的个体，则是复数概念。如：

The government are meeting to discuss my plan this afternoon. 政府官员们今天下午准备开会讨论我的计划。The government has got a big plan for rebuilding the villages.政府有一个重建这些村子的庞大计划。

(3)物质名词，指某种物质材料，因为没有固定的形状和体积而无法分辨为一个一个的个体，所以一般是不可数名词。如：

beer， cheese， cloth， coal， fabric(纤维)， wood， metal， snow， rain， oil， plastic， glass， earth， poison， salt， iron， tea， wool， water， paper， fur， juice， fire， fuel， soap等。

注意：有些物质名词有时候可以转化成可数名词，如在酒吧里可以说：three beers = three glasses of beer和two black coffees = two cups of black coffee。另外，有些物质名词表示种类/某物发生的场或次时可数，如：It was a special tea. = It was a special kind of tea. Silver and gold are two metals. = …two kinds of metal.

Heavy snows and rains hit northern Xinjiang. 新疆北部遭遇数场暴雨和暴雪。
